Long Island University (LIU) is a private university located in New York, with campuses in Brooklyn and Brookville (on Long Island). It was founded in 1926 and is known for its diverse academic programs, vibrant campus life, and commitment to providing students with a well-rounded education. In this section, we will explore the history of LIU and how it has evolved over the years.
History
The idea for Long Island University was first conceived by Dr. Austin J. Platt, a local educator who wanted to provide affordable higher education opportunities for students in New York City and Long Island. He believed that education should be accessible to all, regardless of their financial status.
In 1926, after securing funding from local businessmen, Dr. Platt founded Long Island University with the mission to “provide effective instruction at an inexpensive cost.” The university started off with just 312 students enrolled in its inaugural year and offered only evening classes to accommodate working adults.
Over the next few decades, Long Island University expanded significantly, adding new schools and programs to meet the needs of its growing student population. In 1951, the university established its first overseas campus in Costa Rica, offering students the opportunity to study abroad and gain global perspectives.
In 1986, Long Island University merged with C.W.
Post College in Brookville, New York, further expanding its reach and academic offerings. Today, the university consists of multiple campuses across New York City and Long Island, providing a diverse range of undergraduate and graduate programs in fields such as business, education, health sciences, and more. Despite its growth and success over the years, Dr. Platt’s founding mission of accessibility is still at the core of Long Island University.
The university offers a variety of financial aid options, including scholarships, grants, and work-study programs, to make higher education more affordable for students from all backgrounds. Additionally, the university is committed to diversity and inclusion, with various initiatives and support services in place to ensure that all students feel welcomed and supported on campus.
In recent years, Long Island University has also focused on expanding its global presence through partnerships with international universities and offering study abroad opportunities for students. This allows students to gain a global perspective and prepare for the increasingly interconnected world.
One notable aspect of Long Island University is its emphasis on hands-on learning experiences. Through internships, co-ops, and other experiential learning opportunities, students are able to apply their classroom knowledge in real-world settings and develop practical skills that will be valuable in their future careers. Apart from academics, Long Island University also offers a wide range of extracurricular activities and organizations for students to get involved in.
These include clubs related to various interests such as arts, sports, community service, and more. Additionally, the university hosts numerous events throughout the year, providing students with opportunities for personal growth and making connections with others who share similar passions.
